Q: What happens after the trial ends?
A: After the trial period of a fully featured software, some features will become disabled. You will always have the ability to export your documents. If you decide to buy the product, you will of course not have any limitations.

Q: Where are all the scanned/attached files stored?
A: Your files are stored in their original format in "My documents\42Tags\Data" and the configuration for application is kept in "My documents\42Tags\Configuration". In order to backup your data you need to backup the "My documents\42Tags" folder.

Q: Will it work with my scanner?
A: The answer is most probably yes. We support TWAIN standard for the scanning, which most scanners support. Download our trial version and test it out.

Q: Do you use a proprietary format for storing files?
A: No. Original files are saved in "My documents\42Tags\Data". We add a "col#" prefix to the file name in order to differentiate between different collections.

Q: How do I export files from 42Tags?
A: Just right click the file in the files list view and press Export. You can also use the main menu (File->Export). If you want to email the file, use the Send menu item. See also Drag & Drop feature.

Q: Do I have to tag immediately after scanning?
A: No. Every collection has "Not Tagged" automatically attached to it. "Not Tagged" is a regular tag. You can scan and later search for all collections that have the "Not Tagged" tag, and just complete the work when you have the available time.

Q: Can I scan multiple pages into one file?
A: Yes. If you have ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) just place all your papers and press Scan and 42Tags will do the rest! If your scanner doesn't support ADF just continue pressing Scan for each page or use a timed scan (Tools->Scan->Timed Scan).

Q: What is a "Collection"?
A: A "Collection" is a collection of files (scanned images and/or any other file types) that are logically connected. An example of a Collection is a CV in DOC format with scanned recommendations as separate files.

A Collection is very similar to a Folder but it cannot contain other Collections.

Tagging is applied to Collections so you can find all your files together.

Q: What is the "col#_" prefix my files now have?
A: We use this prefix to connect files from the same collection.

Q: Where did this name, 42Tags, come from?
A: We find tags to be the best tool for document retrieval, and the key proposition of this application. The number 42 is one of our favorites, also as a tribute to Douglas Adams. 42Tags is not limited by 42 tags, rather you can add as many tags as you wish to your scanned documents.

Q: What is a package? What's the difference between a package and a collection?
A: When we first released 42Tags, we used the term "Package" throughout the application, the help, the videos, etc. Later on we found out that a "Collection" would be a better term to describe what we actually meant - so we changed the terminology of 42Tags. So "packages" and "collections" are actually the same thing - see
What is a Collection. If you encounter a "Package" that we missed somewhere, please let us know at support@42Tags.com.

Q: Where can I get 42Tags?
A: You've come to the right place. Just download 42Tags here.

Q: How do I manipulate the Tags section?
A: Right click on a tag button to rename, delete, create a new tag, create a new section or delete an existing section.

In order to move tags from one section to another just hold down the Alt key and drag and drop the tag button.

Q: How do I perform effective searches?
A: Use the Tags section to select tags that you wish to apply to a particular collection. You can use the Query field to enter collection names, tag names, and file names. Don't worry; the auto completion will help you. Use the date filter to only retrieve collections created on certain dates.

The logical operation is always "And" between your query items.

Example:
Query: "John, readme.txt" results in all collections which have "John" somewhere in the collection AND "readme.txt" somewhere in the collection.

* somewhere in the collection = collection name or tag name or contained file name

** Note that the match should be exact, so "re" will not retrieve "readme.txt". In order to assist you, you will get "readme.txt" as an option for the query when you type "re".

Q: How do I use auto completions?
A: Just start typing and you will get suggestions. Use the following shortcuts:
Ctrl+Space - show auto completion again
Esc - hide auto completion
Enter/Double click - select item
Up/Down arrows - change selected item

Q: How do I use the 'Drag & Drop' feature?
A: You can do the following:
1. Drag & Drop files from Windows Explorer to 42Tags (press Shift if you would like to move them instead of copy).
2. Drag & Drop files from 42Tags to Windows Explorer. Note that any tiff file will be converted to pdf. If you would like tiff files, then right click and select 'Export (tff format)' instead.
3. Drag & Drop an Outlook attachment directly into 42Tags.

Please note that to drag & drop multiple files the 'Ctrl' must remain pressed during the operation.

Q: How do I import my already scanned files into 42Tags?
A: Just create new collections and use the "Import from file" (instead of Scan) to create new page collections. You can also use Attach or drag and drop files directly to the files list view (the "Import from file" can give you the option of creating multi-page files from many single image files).

Q: How can I resize or change an image file once it has been created?
A: You have 2 options.
First (recommended) : Just press 'open' to open the image file in a Windows external application (e.g. irfanview). Then edit the image in that application. Once the changes have been saved, they will be reflected in the '42Tags' application.
Second : Press 'locate' to locate the file in the Windows file system. Now you can do anything you like with the file except renaming or deleting it (do it from '42Tags' directly). You can open it in another application and manipulate it like an ordinary file (it is an ordinary file).

Q: How do I backup all my data?
A: Backup "My documents\42Tags" and all subfolders. You can do it manually by copying
the folder to other location (e.g. CD/DVD/LAN/Other HD). You can also use a backup application -
our favorite is Mozy Unlimited Backup.

Q: How do I manipulate files saved in 42Tags? E.g. adding new content to an existing DOC file?
A: Just double click the file in the files list view, or right click selecting "Open". The name of the file will have the "col#_" prefix. We use this prefix to connect files from the same collection. You can change the file and your changes will be saved.

Q: How do I move the data folder ('42Tags') from one hard drive to another?
The default data folder (where all the configurations and files are kept) is saved under 'My Documents' folder. If you would like to change the position of this folder, follow these instructions:
1. Close '42Tags' by right clicking the tray icon and selecting 'Quit'.
2. Move the '42Tags' folder (including its 2 sub folders) to the new position.
3. Run '42Tags' again.
4. '42Tags' will try to find the folder in its old position and will not find it (you moved the folder). It will then ask for new location. Select the new location for the '42Tags' folder and press 'OK'.

Q: How do I Show/Hide different sections?
Use File->View to see the different options. Shortcuts are also available.
